Alessandro Fasse

PhD Student

Alessandro Fasse, a PhD student in computational science at IT’IS, is at the intersection of physics, applied mathematics, computer science, and biomedical engineering. Born in Italy, raised in Germany, and currently based in Zurich, he is developing reliable AI-based computational methods for biomedical applications.

He holds two master’s degrees in Theoretical Physics from the University of Cologne and Pure Mathematics from ETH Zurich. In 2019, he joined ZMT as a Software Engineer / Computational Scientist with the Sim4Life team. In 2021, he transitioned to IT’IS as a PhD student. Since June 2025, he has also been enrolled as a doctoral student at ETH Zurich’s Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Klaas P. Prüssmann at the Institute for Biomedical Engineering.

His research focuses on trustworthy AI for computational biomedicine. He develops physics-informed and simulation-based methods that ensure safe use across various biomedical domains. These methods include personalized neural mass model simulation, spinal cord segmentation, and finite-element-coupled solutions of ohmic quasi-static field equations. These approaches combines physical insight, numerical rigor, and applied AI to create efficient, interpretable, and computationally fast methods.
