Optimization of a Calibration Facility for a Novel Gradient Magnetic Field Probe working in the Frequency Range 3 kHz–10 MHz

Semester / Master's Work – Optimization of a Calibration Facility for a Novel Gradient Magnetic Field Probe Operating over the Frequency Range 3 kHz – 10 MHz

Duke WPT MAGPyAd

The IT’IS Foundation, in support of Zurich 42 partner Schmid and Partner Engineering AG (SPEAG), is developing a new gradient magnetic field probe (MAGPy) for measuring newly introduced high power near-field sources, such as wireless power transfer (WPT) systems that operate over the frequency range 3 kHz – 10 MHz.

As SPEAG's existing certified calibration facility is not suitable for this novel device, a new calibration facility is under development.

In this project, the successful candidate will work to 1) fully automate the calibration procedure by incorporating the use of SPEAG's DASY robot; 2) develop a new post-processing tool; 3) characterize the completed calibration facility with respect to the calibration of the MAGPy probe.

We are seeking a student with very good programming skills (Python; C a plus) and knowledge of electromagnetics.

The workflow will include:

  • gaining initial understanding of the MAGPy probe and the calibration procedure so far developed
  • optimization of the calibration procedure through robot automation
  • development and validation of the post-processing tool
  • characterization of the completed facility with respect to the calibration of the MAGPy probe
