Computational Modeling of Neuromodulation for Electroceutical Applications and Neuroprosthetics

Computational Modeling of Neuromodulation for Electroceutical Applications and Neuroprosthetics (PhD)

Workplace:
Zurich, Switzerland
Company:
IT'IS Foundation for Research on Information Technologies in Society,
ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) Zurich
Description:

The computational life sciences (CLS) group of IT’IS pursues simulation-based assessment of interactions between physical exposure (e.g., to electromagnetic (EM) fields) and the physiology of living tissues. IT’IS co-developed the leading CLS platform Sim4Life. A major research focus involves interactions between EM exposure and neural activity, with applications ranging from low-frequency exposure safety to neuroprosthetics, electroceuticals, and other therapeutic applications. For that purpose, electrophysiologically functionalized, detailed anatomical models are developed and employed, with the goal to gain mechanistic understanding, optimize and personalize devices and treatments, and discover novel therapeutic approaches. Research is performed in international collaborations with world-leading experimental groups, major device manufacturers, and regulators.

The CLS group is therefore looking for candidates interested in the development of related simulation technology, as well as theoretical and applied modelling studies. Additional topics of interest include uncertainty assessment, validation, optimization, image-based modelling, etc.

The PhD candidate will join a highly motivated and dynamic team working in various related research areas to conduct independent and original research under supervision on the development of simulation technologies, software tools, and platforms for neurostimulation.

Education:
We are seeking a creative, talented, and ambitious candidate with an interest in computational life sciences (CLS) and a university degree (diploma or master’s) in life sciences, natural sciences (biophysics, physics, mathematics), medical physics, or biomedical engineering; preferably with solid scientific programming skills (Python, C++, etc.), competence in computational neuroscience, and, ideally, familiarity with NEURON (Yale); good organizational skills, high motivation, and flexibility; excellent ability to work both independently and as part of a team, including external collaborators.
Beginning:
As soon as possible
Application Process:

Applications should consist of:

  • Cover letter including the position title and a statement addressing the selection criteria and outlining the motivation for applying for the position
  • Detailed CV
  • Copies of degree certificates and  or diplomas, including grades
  • Letters of recommendation
