Numerical Modeling of Ultrasonic Wave Propagation in Therapeutic FUS Treatments

Numerical Modeling of Ultrasonic Wave Propagation in Therapeutic Focused Ultrasound Treatments (PhD)

Zurich, Switzerland
IT'IS Foundation for Research on Information Technologies in Society,
ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) Zurich

The IT’IS Foundation is an independent, non-profit research institute pursuing advanced research in simulation methodologies and applications of physical, physiological, and biological processes to bridge the gap between bench and bedside in the emerging field of personalized medicine.

One of the Foundation’s growing fields of expertise is focused ultrasound (FUS) and the modeling of complex FUS-based treatment scenarios. FUS is a promising non-invasive alternative to interventional therapies. In that context, the IT’IS Foundation has developed a framework for numerical multi-physics modeling of FUS treatments in computational anatomical human models generated from medical image data.

To keep building our expertise and consolidate our framework, we are seeking a PhD candidate to extend our existing framework by implementing additional propagation models, e.g. (visco)elastic wave propagation, with various numerical techniques such as finite-elements, angular spectrum, spectral collocation, or k-space pseudo-spectral methods.

Education / Profile:
• MSc or equivalent degree in physics, medical physics, mathematics, computer science, electrical or communications engineering, or similar field
• Excellent knowledge of C/C++ and Python with a working knowledge of libraries such as Boost, VTK, PETSc, HDF5, etc.
• Strong background in numerical analysis and methods such as finite-differences, finite-elements, spectral collocation, or k-space pseudo-spectral methods
• Experience with high-performance computing frameworks such as OpenMP, MPI, CUDA, OpenCL. Knowledge of cloud-computing, e.g., Hadoop, Spark, MapReuce a plus
• Experience with Visual Studio, unit-testing on both C++ and Python, and version-control tools (mostly SVN, Git)
• Prior experience with biomedical simulations advantageous
• Excellent command of the English language; knowledge of German a plus
• Good organizational skills, high motivation, and flexibility
• Excellent ability to work both independently and in a team
What IT'IS Offers:
• Modern research infrastructure
• Outstanding, young, interdisciplinary research teams
• Opportunity to cooperate with leading research and industrial laboratories, regulatory bodies, and renowned clinical researchers worldwide
• Flexible working hours in a vibrant workplace in the heart of Zurich
As soon as possible.
