The enhanced models of the Virtual Classroom project complements the models of the vertiual family:
High-resolution MR-imaging data were segmented to yield up to 84 different tissues and organs. The models were reconstructed as three-dimensional CAD objects with high fidelity anatomical detail. The CAD format of the objects allows meshing of the models at arbitrary resolutions without loss of detail and small features due to multiple sampling. They can be exported in a generic voxel-based format using the Virtual Family Tool. All four models and the Virtual Family Tool are provided free of charge to the scientific community, for research purposes only.
The development of the models was carried out in cooperation with the Center for Devices and Radiological Health of the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Silver Spring, MD, USA; the Austrian Research Centers GmbH, Seibersdorf, Austria; the University of Houston, TX, USA; the Hospital of the Friedrich-Alexander-University (FAU), Erlangen, Germany; and Siemens Medical Solutions, Erlangen, Germany.
Further development and significant improvements to the anatomical fidelity of the children models could be made thanks to the contributions of The Netherlands Organization for Health Research and Development (ZonMw). The models were reviewed by pediatricians of the Erasmus MC-Daniel den Hoed Cancer Center.
SPEAG and the IT'IS Foundation sponsored the development of the tools needed to develop these phantoms. se newly released and highly enhanced models that have vastly improved spatial resolution and effectiveness of the CAD quality and handling.
In the summer of 2010 the IT'IS Foundation started a new initiative to move the models to the next level of sophistication, i.e. high quality volume meshes and the ability to make physical-reality-based deformations.
If you would like to receive the models and the Virtual Family Tool, you will need to accept the license agreement of non-commercial scientific use only, as well as hiding face and private parts for all published images. The DVD contains the Virtual Family Tool and the four human models in CAD format and a generic voxel format in different resolutions. Please note that the using the CAD models with the Virtual Family Tool requires a 64bit operating system (Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7). The voxel models can be used with any software. Depending on their resolution, the memory requirements for loading and processing the voxel models can be high.
