Evaluation of Measurement Techniques to Show Compliance With RF Safety Limits in Heterogeneous Field Distributions

Sven Kühn and Niels Kuster, in IEEE Transactions on Electromagnetic Compatibility, Volume 52, Issue 4, pp. 820–828, November 2010, online November 15

A conservative, technically rigorous, and time-effective procedure for in situ testing of compliance with radio frequency electromagnetic field (EMF) safety limits is proposed. The method employs the maximum hold hand-held sweeping technique, i.e., maximum search. The procedure is based and supported by numerical findings of the absorption characteristics of the human body in scattered EMF environments. We evaluated the applicability and estimated the uncertainty of the method by an interlaboratory comparison with trained and untrained measurement personnel.
