IT'IS Hosts Thermal Dose Workshop 2019

IT'IS hosted a Thermal Dose Workshop at Z43 on April 2–3, 2019, for discussions of critical safety issues in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Participants packed the third-floor meeting room for 2 days of presentations on a wide range of pertinent topics and intense discussion to inform the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) MT40 team working on the draft of the latest version of the MRI safety standard 60601-2-33.

Unified SAR Measurement Standard Moves Forward; 5G and IoT Standards Also Progress

Last week during IEC and IEEE joint meetings in New Jersey, the unified SAR measurement standard IEC/IEEE 62209-1528 passed another milestone towards completion. Publication is expected later this year. Two committee drafts (CDs) for exposure assessment of 5G millimeter-wave devices were positively received and are in preparation for the next stage. The IEEE Guide 1528.7 for IoT devices will complete its first draft in June.

Z43 at the BMES-FDA Conference and ISO 10974 Joint Working Group in Washington DC, March 19-22

The BMES-FDA Frontiers in Medical Devices Conference took place in Washington DC this week, with a focus on personalized patient healthcare and many references to the "digital twin" concept. Concurrently with the conference, the ISO 10974 Joint Working Group (JWG) met to discuss safety aspects of the electromagnetic compatibility of active implants during MRI exposures.

At the latest IEC TC106 JWG13 editorial meeting in Frankfurt, the comment responses for IEC/IEEE 62209-1528 were completed. This is an important standard for exposure evaluation from wireless devices that is now prepared for IoT.
