o²S²PARC Project: Open Online Simulations for Stimulating Peripheral Activity to Relieve Conditions

o2S2PARC Project: NIH Award for the Development of a New Modeling and Simulation Platform

IT’IS is pleased to announce the award of the project o2S2PARC – Open Online Simulations for Stimulating Peripheral Activity to Relieve Conditions. The project is funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) through the Common Fund’s SPARC program to establish a Modeling and Simulation (SIM-) Core within the SPARC Data and Resource Center.

The o2S2PARC project is focused on building a comprehensive, freely accessible, intuitive, and interactive online platform to simulate peripheral nerve system neuromodulation/stimulation and its impact on organ physiology in a precise and predictive manner. By using both state-of-the art and highly detailed animal and human anatomical models with realistic tissue property distributions, it will be possible to simulate interactions of nerve electrophysiology and organ physiology within the complex environment of the human body.

The platform will be open-source and enable users in and outside the SPARC community to create anatomical structures and place nerve trajectories according to their project-specific requirements. Advanced analysis tools that allow to perform sensitivity and uncertainty evaluations and optimization-based parameter fitting, will also be established.

The project is supported with US$ 10 million with an anticipated duration of five years. The kick-off meeting will be held on 16-17 November 2017 in Washington DC, USA.
